So, who voted for us?

With the shock that the Lions have been kicked out of SupeRugby still sinking in, the question now being asked is who voted for us and who voted against us.

Information that I’m receiving – which is still to be confirmed, is that the big unions all had a gentlemans agreement that if the Kings get in, they would all go out.

It does seem that the Bulls and Sharks voted for the Lions to remain in SupeRugby, with all the other unions voting against us, including the Cheetahs and WP.

If this is the case, which at the moment seems to be so, the Bulls and Sharks will have my unconditional support in next season’s SupeRugby. This will just enhance my hatred for the WPRU, and I will surely support any team the Cheetahs, WP and Kings play against. Even if they are Australian or New Zealand outfits.

Quade Cooper on Twitter tweeted the following after hearing the news.

“Got to feel for all the Johannesburg Lions plays and staff. I hope ya all are able to continue to work/play and haven’t been put out of jobs.”

It also seems that Cheeky wants to appeal the 1 year inclusion and wants a 3 year guarantee. Next he will insist that they are guaranteed at least 5 victories in SupeRugby 2013.

Ja Willa, it would seem that there is no gentlemen in sport and the old trusted handshake means, nothing Thanks to the Bulls and Sharks, Im am suprised that The Sharks voted for us, I am shocked the Cheetahs did not, the WP can not be trusted so ja, thanks for the information but I can not support any other SA Team, The Bulls and The Sharks will have my respect and gratitude, but nothing more.

  • Zibbie

Remember Province also had to sit out one year, 97 I think, not sure. IF and this is a big IF, If we can keep our players and loan them out to the big unions aka Sharks and Bulls for Superrugby and then get them back for the Currie Cup we will be ok. Because come the Promotion relegation matches, believe me, the lions will be ready.

But the players would rather just move to another union, but thats it. I have no respect for Saru, they have no backbone, not just with this, but they should never have let the Rebels enter the tournament, it should have been the kings. SA has got the best viewership and the most money flowing into superrugby, most people attending games etc. hence Saru should have the most power in making decisions, but they are weak and all should not be in that position.

  • Lion4ever

So when we get back into Super Rugby, just exclude the Leopards and Pumas.

  • Mr-T

No suprise about the Cheetahs, cause if they supported us, (keep in mind the Kings would have still stayed), then there was a possibility that the Cheetahs and Lions would have become the Cats again, something the Cheetahs DIDN’T want.

Pumas and Leopards giving us the finger, no suprise there either. We “owe” them money and we are waiting on the outcome on that issue, so why will they support us??

Hats off to the Bulls ans Sharks.

  • Mr-T

@Lions86, yeah that is true, but that was because the top 4 SA teams participated, there were NO franchices then. Think that was the year EP did actually played SuperRugby.

  • Mr-T

    As many have mentioned….

The bottomline is, if SARU had any balls, there should have been a Promotion / Relegation game between the Lions and EP Queers, THIS year to determine who will play…..that is what’s pissing off about everybody.

Should we have by some unexplainable miracle manage to loose to them, by all means let them play SR, but come on a free farking ride from CC 1st Div to SR, only in SA.

  • Lion86

JA Mr-T, there weren’t any franchises back then and the top 4 teams from the currie cup played superrugby, so WP was left out on merit. The Cheetahs replaced them that year.Look if the Kings structures and management was so great then they would have been in the currie cup premiership by now.

Saru is very scared that the Lions will take them to court as we are not relegated on merit. I really dont think that this is the end of this story, the kings and Lions will take Saru to court. The kings are unhappy about only getting 1 year. The Lions are unhappy with this whole political mess.

  • Red_band

So what happened to SARU saying – “the Kings will play super rugby but not at the expense of one of the existing unions”????

Also, don’t we have a contract with SANZAR until 2015 for a 30-40 million share of the broad casting rights etc. So what about that now? Will we be bought out of our contract??

  • Red_band

In my opinion, if the players had any honor or backbone then they would say “well we were part of the problem and also had a hand in this mess, so we will stick around and help fix it”

But I doubt that they will accept the responsibility and stay… All will leave.

  • Red Band, the Sanzar contract is with SARU. It only stipulates that SA will have 5 sides representing them in SupeRugby.

The individual unions don’t have any fixed contracts or guarantees that they will play in SupeRugby.

But I believe the union will go to arbitration, not to change the decision or throw the Kings out, but only to have a fair opportunity to play a prom/relegation match against the Kings before the 2013 season. Can’t see any arbitrator or litigation not going for the Lions request.

Too much loss of money and income at stake to not give either union an opportunity to prove their worth.

  • Lion4ever

Apparantly KDK will issue a statement on the way forward on Tues. So we will see what happens

  • jacques 01

I agree with all you guys but I won’t support another SA team. I respect the Sharks and Bulls for there commitment to the agreement but for the Cheatahs and WP they are a bunch of two face sons of B… Hope you both have a worst S15 than the Rebels and Force.

Just a question. I know we ended last in our conference but at least we won 2 of the SA teams. The Cheetahs and the Sharks. Did the Cheetahs manage to beat any SA teams? I know this won’t change anything but does this mean we are the worst SA team. I doubt that.

Why were all the other unions entitled to vote? They don’t even play S15. Shame on the Leopards and Pumas. You bite the hand that feeds you. We supplied you with decent players etc. This is the thanks we’re getting. Hope you form part of the EP Kings when we knock them out again.

Kevin negotiate a three year deal to play in another competition and F…k SARU and there relegation. For all SA teams hope you have the worst S15 ever. Go Crusaders and NZ. I’ll support SA rugby again when the Lions are back.

  • Lion4ever

So Cheeky is complaining about the 1 year gift he has been given!!!

  • Red_band

There are conflicting reports, I read on another webite that the Bulls and Sharks voted against us and the Pumas and Leopards voted for us??? So I don’t know?

Also read that the broadcasting rights have been shared 6 ways since 2009, so we shouldn’t loose any money from that.

  • Red Band, my info is what Graham Joffe reported.

So let’s see, the truth will come out sometime. But I cannot see the Bulls having voted for the Kings. The Lions and Bulls have always had a mutual respectful relationship. I will be extremely disappointed if the Bulls voted for the Kings.

  • Greg

Jaques, Interesting question. If we were to look at the SA conference only, taking into account only games played between the SA sides, this is what the log would look like:

Team Games Win Draw Loss Pts
    Stormer 8 7 0 1 29
    Bulls 8 5 0 3 26
    Sharks 8 5 0 3 26
    Lions 8 2 0 6 10
    Cheetah 8 1 0 7 8

  • Red Band, just heard from another source that it was the Bulls and Sharks who voted for us.

  • Lion de Klerk

Willa mag ek ASB op daardie “Cheeky” aap se kop gaan spring!!!!!!!!!!

  • Lion4ever

Greg, thats an interesting bit of info. So we were not the worst team in SA according to this. Brings up the question for next year: Will SARU only take SA log into account as above, or will they look at the overall log?

  • StefJo

Is it possible that the Bulls only wanted to keep a possible ‘merger’ or at least some loan players out of the Bulls team…?
Not to sound negative but it is a possibility.
Either way, I think the Blues is my team for next year!

  • Lion86

A Lions Bulls merge for one year, would be a good team. That is if the Bulls will admit that some of our players are actually better than theirs

  • “As stated before, the decision taken at the SARU General Council meeting yesterday to eliminate the Lions from SupeRugby in 2013 is very disappointing. Media speculation of an immediate exodus of players have created further uncertainty amongst supporters and stakeholders and Lions management therefore deem it prudent to confirm that the larger group of senior players are contracted at least until 31 October 2013. This list of senior players so contracted include, amongst others:

    Oops. Posted before looking!!

  • hahahahahaha L4E the copycat.

  • Lion86

Dont see Murry’s name there, when fit he is really good. But we have no chance in signing him now.

  • emiel

Hope the Lions will be able to retain players such as Cilliers, Taute and Jantjies. It will propably boil down to whether they can get financial backing. See that none of the promising youngsters such as Caulib Oosthuizen, Ruan Botha, Volmink etc have been contracted.

  • Loosehead

So you guys are dissing the Freestate when you only have rumors and speculation that they voted against your inclusion? Swak!

  • LV

    Hi Loosehead,

Quote from Kevin de Klerk in an interview –

“The other guys ran, just like we expected them to run, especially my ‘pal’ there in the Free State … he is known for that.”

It would appear as though our sources were reliable.

But I suppose that is besides the point. Loosing a vote 23 – 6 means that there were plenty more who voted against us.

  • Tascha

Yes but the way Kevin said it, it sounded like the Stormers did vote for us????

  • Loosehead

LV thanks. I hadn’t heard that. My apologies on behalf of the Cheetahs supporters.

  • lionsno23

Bulls & Sharks voted for us !!!!
