Mitchell’s Golden Parachute… Ehemmm Disciplinary Proceedings to Start Today

The Lions may not be playing any rugby at the moment, but still find it hard to keep away from controversy. Head Coach John Mitchell will begin his formal disciplinary proceedings this morning and I am sure that between the 2 parties some kind of financially crippling solution will be reached.

It probably is still for the best and out of fairness to the team that everybody waited till the end of the round robin stages for these proceedings to start as I’m sure that some of the players may be called in to give testomany.

The team have been given the week off and no new Head Coach has been named yet, nor has any formal application process for the position been advertised. The GLRU are playing this by the book and are not giving Mitchell and his legal team any ammo to shoot with.

I have said this before and it is so pathetically obvious that after this, I’m certain that Mitchell doesn’t want to coach the Lions any more and the Lions don’t want him to coach them anymore. A clear cut meeting of the minds and a simple solution?

But still everybody has to dance the dance and the piper must get paid.

You can say many things about John Mitchell, but there is one thing that nobody can dispute – the man does not talk k@k. He will have a side to his story, a side that until now has not been splashed accross the media. A side that I’m sure will be made eloquently and empellingly and one that will be well worth listening to.

It still seems like he is fighting this thing alone and has not had the public support of any of his fellow coaching staff, players and administrators – perhaps out of fear or possibly out of self preservation.

No doubt details will emerge in due course.

He reminds me a lot of Mallett. Straight talking, uncompromising and an excellent coach.

The Lions are going to be weaker off without him.

One has to wonder about the other coaching jobs, Western Force I think and the All Blacks that he also left under a cloud. I don’t think that the players have any problem being told that they are not playing or pulling their weight in the team situation, I think that it is how it is done. All coaches speak to the players about negatives and positives at half time and after the game but it seems Mitchell had no idea when and how to speak to the players, often accusing them in public places and in front of fans of for example “the worst tackle rate” etc and then when the stats came out that particular player had the best stats of the team. Being verbally abusive is not the way to inspire your players, and respect is needed on both sides.

Any parent knows that your kids are different and respond differently to different discipline methods/techniques. From what I’ve heard from various sources Mitchell knows and applies only one method to all … humiliation (and afkak). He might know a lot about rugby but from where I’m standing looking at this he has zero people skills.

Yup, we need a ‘Jake White’…(more metal than anything). I think along with Carlos & Acker’s we have enough rugby knowledge, we have got the talent, just somebody to motivate in the right manner!
Remember after every 2nd half comeback commentators use to ask what as said in the changeroom at halftime…Josh just said: This is public TV, I don’t think it will be allowed….
Thus, instead of plans & motivation, half time was a ‘uitk@k’ session, and I believe it can only be a matter of time before players get fed up with that!

Mitchell is the only coach to have brought some form of respectability to the Lions since Laurie Mains, and it seems as if they Union and it’s supporters want to get rid of him.

I have been saying for the last two years that we need a very good defence coach. If the stormers had the same defence as ours they would also be at the bottom of the log. And if we had a decent defence, we wouldnt be in the current position.

  • Dewaldt

Can’t agree more @ Castle. We haven’t stopped scoring points. The problem is that if the bucket has holes no amount of water would ever fill it up. The change under Ackerman(someone I don’t rate) has been revelating. Get a defense coach that understands defence.Someone who is a specialist in defence but also has other qualities. Someone like Stonehouse…

My only wish is that the Lions as a Union can find unity again. Not just on the pitch but off it as well.We don’t have the stars. We got a refurbished 7 playing as our main lock, we got players whose always looking over their shoulders for alternative options.I think thje main dissapointment this year was that we never played as a team like we did last year.Injuries had a big role to play. There is a lot to be negative about.A coach arrives, wins the CC and is carried off the field. He starts off the SR campaign with 9 frontline players injured. We run the Bulls and Stormers close, lose against the Canes after the hooter, lose most games by less than 10. ( Experience ).All these are negative things to be worried about. But as a Lions supporter I pledge my complete support to the Union.I have always and will always be a Lion. Thanks to Kevin de Klerk who is working his behind off fixing what was broken.Never has he complained about anything, protected the players and negotiated deals. Whatever the outcome may be I will be a Lion.I believe that in JMs time structures was laid for the first time in ages. We’ve got sufficient backup in positions we never had. We’ve got a core of senior players (Franco,Minnie,Strauss,Butch,JC,Pat,Murray) now that can take us forward. Exciting new youngsters (Coetzee,Visagie) and one or two Xfactor players Jantjies,Mapoe and Taute.Let’s stand behind our team.If we do get relegated then we build,if we stay we work hard and demand a defense coach ( Very Serious about this matter, Can’t we get LV or Willa to write a letter to Kdk as WTR Lions supporters to request this)

I have said a long time ago that we need a defense coach, and also said that if we could prevent only 2 tries per match from getting scored against us we would of be in a much better position on the log maybe even in the playoffs.

Unfortunately with JM as our coach that would never happen because he believed that it was not necessary and to proud to admit that we needed one. I just hope that what ever happens with the new appointment someone will sort this problem out and that such a specialist will be appointed.

I also agree that the reason the stommers ended as log leaders was because of the fact that their defense was top quality. I also agree that Willa And LV must make a suggestion to Kevin in this regard. What can we lose if we try he can only say no, but as i see it Kevin will at least listen and discuss this with his coaching staff i am sure about that.

  • mufasa62

Sal bly wees as hy belangstel.

  • mags

Moedelose duke – rather keep quiet because you don’t know NOTHING!!!!!!!!!!! At the same time – get rid of WT as well!! People that is not involved does not know what is going on!!!! The players has the right to say how they feel – it is their lives and jobs that JM is messing with! Agree Ed the Lion – they can definitely afford Mallet if they could afford Jm and his clan!!

  • Moedelose Duke

  • Castle

@Mags – This may be a stupid question but who or what is WT?? or did you mean WTR?

  • Moedelose Duke

ek dink nie dis n dom vraag nie ,ek dog SY se WTK(we talk kak)of nie?????

  • Lion86

    He probably means Wayne Taylor=WT

  • Lion86

As for the players vs Mitchell. Its a tough one, I dont know what happened there. The lions players have been rubbish all year. Mitchell has a bad record in terms of his people skills. So I cant really comment at all until I know the truth.

Maybe the players are complaining like girls or maybe they have valid complaints. We will have to see.

  • mufasa62

You can’t compare previous situations where coaches were fired, with this situation because with the previous coaches and complaints there were different players and circumstances as well as different management. Every other Union has their fare share of problems between coaches and players too, you just don’t hear about it every time.

So to say that at the Lions, players always get their way and get coaches fired is bull!!! This is a total unique situation on its own, and yes every situations has got 2 sides 2 it i do agree.

I do however refer to what Willa also said about the players when the news broke about JM suspension, and just about a day later Willa wrote to say he was sorry for blaming the Players and that what JM did was not acceptable but that he can’t tell what happened.

One cannot ignore the fact that JM has a reputation of leaving at previous unions Because of complaints against him so in that regard he has build his own bad record and not every other Union where he coached can now all of sudden be wrong. My opinion about JM is that he is a great coach but he is lacking in people skills and if he don’t change himself in the people skills department he is going to get fired all the time because of that. Maybe JM needs to learn out of his previous mistakes just as he wants the players to learn from their mistakes?

Surely after this incident he must now start looking at himself as coach and realize that he need to make some changes in the way he works with people because that is the essence of a really great coach is to be the complete package even if your players frustrate you with the mistakes they keep on making is to always keep professional and calm put your anger aside and focus on the player and his skills, and after enough chances rather then tell the player he is not good enough.

Taking everything into consideration i just want to point out that the players did look a much happier bunch so far under Akkerman as oppose to lately under JM so that also has to tell you something for sure.

  • Blesbeer

Putting a team through their paces is one thing and over-training them is another… If I’m not mistaken, I’m sure I heard that he had unreasonable demands of the players during training? Could that not be a reason for our freakish injury list?
I know for a fact that some players where mentioning “opfok” exercises after a loss and when JM was having a bad day? That can explain the fatigue and ultimately, injuries?

  • mufasa

If they had “opfok” excercises after losing, surely we must have the fittest team on the planet by now! Even though I had lots of respect for the man,I always felt that Mitchell did not seem to accept ANY responsibility for losses at all. Post match interviews always revolved round players not doing what they were supposed to. Maybe he was partly right, but the coach is responsible for the gameplan, and I felt that more often than not we had the wrong gameplan for the match. I was not entirely surprised when this story broke.

  • Kat

I’ve been told that most of our injuries that crippled our chances not to end last in the SA Conference (and us subsequently sit with the Kings mess) were caused by off the field incidents during training. If that is the case then Mitchell is to blame for us sitting with the Kings mess, and not the Cheetahs for example. He then may be the reason we get demoted/relegated. That is the damage a coach can cause a union.

Anything to come out of these proceedings yet? Other than to say that they have been postponed?
