The Lions travel to Cape Town to face the highly rated Stormers, with the Cape side still well in the running to host a play-off spot and topping the SA Conference.
The Lions have suspended their coach John Mitchell and John Ackerman has taken over as Head coach in the interim.
Will the Lions be able to put all the uncertainty of next season behind them and all the off field shenanigans and deliver a performance worthy of SupeRugby?
Pat Cilliers, Jaco Taute and CJ van der Linde have all been excluded from the side with the latter’s availability on the bench dependent on a late fitness test.
It’s the same team that beat the Sharks with only CJ vd Linde and Pat Cilliers missing out. And its here where I believe the Lions will fall short. The Stormers are individually probably the strongest side in the competition. Their man on man defense is the most effective of all the sides, and this is where the Stormers will beat the Lions.
The Stormers are also missing a couple of key plays with Eben Etsebeth being the most noticeable. This is a Stormers side that might give the Lions the opportunity to cause an upset, but with all that has happened to the Lions recently and especially with the game being played in Cape Town, I can’t see the Lions upsetting the Apple cards.
The Lions will play a better and more conservative game plan which will assist their cause, but in the end, the Cape side will be too strong in contact and in defense and beat the Lions by between 8 and 15 points.
